The Portland Muslim Community Police Council was formed in March 2016 after recognizing the mutual need for the Muslim community and the police to engage with each other and work together. The council works to collaborate on the many complex socio-economic, political and cultural issues in relation to the American criminal justice system and community safety and security.
The council is made up religious leaders and community members as well as members of the Portland Police Bureau.
The goal of the council is to develop a long-term community engagement program with the Muslim community and implement the program's mission throughout the Police Bureau.
By working together on these complex social justice issues, the council hopes to assist Portland's Muslim community members with their integration process, mitigate unnecessary difficulties and negative outcomes, and ensure the peace and stability of their families and community
