For the 18th year in a row we invite the most sustainable organizations in Portland to compete against the best in Portland for the prestigious juried award known as BEST (Businesses for an Environmentally Sustainable Tomorrow). This gala event in April honors up to 10 businesses or organizations that exemplify ambitious and creative solutions for sustainability.
The application period opens in January 2010. Applicants must show a comprehensive commitment to sustainability in all aspects of their building, operation, product or service. In past years, organizations have showcased dramatic waste reductions, unique building material reuse, innovative farming services and collaborative community partnerships.
The BEST Awards accepts applications in five separate categories: overall sustainability practices (broken down by micro, small, medium and large organizations), sustainable products or services, green building and sustainable food systems.
What does it take to attain BEST status?
In 2009 one of the sustainable food system winners was Ladybug Organic Coffee. This North Portland establishment takes their coffee service to a new level with their commitment to made-from-scratch cooking with organic ingredients, community activities and near-zero waste generation due to durable serving ware, composting, food donation and creative reuse.
